DAILY MINDSET

“Adversity causes some to break. For others, it breaks records.”

Adversity can really, really hurt. Let’s not create an illusion that it’s all sunshine and rainbows. It will try our values, test our patience, and challenge who we are as human beings. It’s no warm cup of cocoa on a winter morning.

But a warm cup of cocoa doesn’t make us better. A picture perfect day doesn’t make us better. We learn when we make mistakes. When we miss, trip up, face plant, and get caught off guard. At our very basic biological level, this is how we adapt. It’s encoded in us… and it’s seriously like a secret sleeping super power.

That is, of course, if we them it our advantage. The nature of a mistake is not to tell us we suck. That we failed. That we’re not good enough. The nature of a mistake is to educate us. To give us the ammunition we need to become better. To take the challenge to earn greatness, out of something that once was not.

Adversity is not in the way to greatness.
Adversity is the way the way to greatness.
This is the championship mindset.

DAILY MINDSET

“As I walked through the door to my freedom, I knew that if I did not leave all the anger, hatred and bitterness behind… I would still be in prison.”

~Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
He had no bed.
He was routinely put in solitary confinement, with no end in sight.
He at one point was thrown into an empty grave, where he was sure he was about to be killed. But was instead, he was urinated on by the prison guards. For their humor.

What he went through is something no human being should ever have to endure.

Yet, to his inauguration ceremony as president of South Africa, he invited one of his former jailers. On another occasion, he invited out to lunch the man who tried to get him sentenced to death (instead of prison). And on his 20th anniversary of his release, Nelson invited a third jailor to dinner with his wife.

When asked why he would do this, why he would invite the very same people that tried to make his life miserable, he replied: “If I did not… I would still be in prison.”

DAILY MINDSET

“Head, Heart, Hands.”

~Jim Kwik

Every action originates as a thought in our head. But from there, thoughts of course don’t just materialize into existence in front of us. It doesn’t go “head to hands”. There’s a step between that decides if it’s going to actually happen: heart.

It’s the emotional connection. Our level of buy-in. We could have the most grandiose plan of all time, but if we aren’t bought in with our heart in full… we know it will never work.

It’s less about what we’re doing, and more about why we’re doing it. Our success is less about “which path”, and more about the level of commitment we bring to it.

As we move through our day, let’s consider this concept of Head, Heart, Hands. If we find ourselves struggling with something… a specific career, a relationship, a lifestyle… What is causing it? Are we bought in?

Head, Heart, Hands.
Our reasons are what will reap our results.

ABOUT GLEN DOHERTY

Former U.S. Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, 42, of Winchester, Massachusetts, assigned to a State Department security detail in Benghazi, Libya, died in an attack on a U.S. consulate on September 11, 2012. He is survived by his parents, Ben and Barbara, sister Katie, and brother Greg.

“Glen, I still can’t believe you punched out early on me, but glad to hear from the guys that you fought like a hero–no surprise there. You should know, your efforts resulted in the rescue of over 20 Department of State personnel. They are alive today because of yours and Ty’s heroic action. I know you hate funerals as much as I do but, the service in Winchester was humbling and inspiring. The people of Boston are amazing. I had to choke back the tears as me and the boys rolled through town, and thousands of people lined the streets to honor a hero and our friend and teammate. Seeing American citizens united around a hero, if only for a brief moment, restored my faith in humanity and that there’s other things more important in life than killing each other. Your family is and was amazing. Their poise, patience and the dignity they displayed was incredible to witness. Your mom, Barbara, stood by stoically for hours to ensure she greeted everyone who came to pay their respects. She was an inspiration to everyone who watched. Seeing your dad, his sadness and how proud he was of you, made me give him a big hug, and reminded me to work harder at patching things up with my own father. Greg delivered one of the best talks I’ve ever heard under the most difficult of situations. What an amazing brother; I hope to get to know him better. His speech made me reflect on my own life choices and how important our relationship with friends and family are. I’m going to work harder at embracing my friends and family the way you always did. Katie gave such an awesome toast at the wake with all the Bub lessons to live by, I smirked secretly to myself knowing that I’ve heard them all before and will never forget. “Drive it like it’s stolen!” and “Kids don’t need store-bought toys, get them outdoors!” and all the rest. Your nephews are amazing and so well-behaved. Great parents of course. F.Y.I., I told them I’d take them flying when they come out west. They were beaming when I described all the crazy flying adventures me and their uncle went on. I told them how you and I would fly with my own kids and take turns letting them sit on our laps to get a few minutes at the controls. I’ll do it up right and let them each have a go at the controls. Sean has been steadfast in his support role and has handled everything thrown at him. Helping him this last week really showed me why he was such a close friend of yours. He’s solid, and I look forward to his friendship for years to come. You chose well having him execute your will, he’s solid. We are all dedicated, as you explicitly indicated to us all, to throw you the biggest eff-ing party we can, and to celebrate your life as well as our own. Done deal; Sean and I are on it. Most of SEAL Team 3 GOLF platoon showed up in Boston. It was great to see how guys like Tommy B. just made stuff happen, no matter what was needed. Things just got handled like men of action handle them, no questions asked and no instructions needed — just get it done in true SEAL fashion. One by one the Tridents were firmly pounded into to the mahogany as the guys paid their respect. Mike and I handed the plank to your mom, choked back tears, and kissed her on the cheek. We both told her how much you’ll be missed by us all. Afterwards, the Team Guys, Elf, Steve, Sean and others tipped a few back in your honor. In good Irish fashion we drank whiskey from Sean’s “What Jesus Wouldn’t Do” flask, hugged each other like brothers and said goodbye, each in our own way. My kids will miss their Uncle Glen. I told them it’s O.K. to cry (we all had a good one together) and to be sad but not for too long. You wouldn’t want that. They will grow older, and like the rest of us, and be better human beings for having known you.

You definitely lived up to the words of Hunter S. Thompson: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a ride!”

When I skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke myself I’ll expect to see your smiling face handing me a cold beer. See you on the other side, brother. You are missed by many.” -Brandon Webb (Former Navy SEAL who served with “Glen”

DAILY MINDSET

“The Marshmallow Experiment”

The experiment conducted decades ago began by bringing children into a room, one by one, sitting them down in a chair with a single marshmallow in front of them.

Here, the researcher offered a deal. He said he was going to leave the room, and if the child didn’t eat the marshmallow while he was away, then a second marshmallow would be rewarded. However, if the child chose to eat the marshmallow while he was away, they wouldn’t get a second. What he didn’t say was how long he’d be gone. The choice was simple – one treat now, or two treats later.

Some of the children ate it right away. Some squirmed around for a bit, and gave in after a couple of minutes. And some of the children managed to wait until the researcher came back.

The research team followed the participants for 40 years afterwards. The children who ate the marshmallow immediately… struggled in life. They didn’t have careers they were proud of, and they didn’t live lives they were happy with. The children who held out went on to live as highly successful individuals.

The ability to delay gratification is a critical component in life. Whether we want to go to the CrossFit Games, be the best spouse we can be, or propel our career forward, we must have the willpower to stay the course with the longer term in mind. Even when we’re tired, hungry, beat up, and starving for a bite of that marshmallow… we’re tough enough to hang on.

DAILY MINDSET

“There will never be a better you, than you.”

There is a lot to be said about authenticity.
The first definition inside Merriam-Webster reads, “worthy of acceptance or belief.”
If there’s one sure way to find failure in something, it’s through not being ourselves. It just doesn’t pan out in the long run. While we always remain a student, the harm lies when we blur the lines between emulating the traits of our mentors… with trying to actually be them.

Our mentors do not wish for us to follow in their footsteps.
Our mentors wish for us to go further. To blaze the path further than before.

We have incredible leaders to guide us. But it is now on us to push even further. And there’s no one suited better for that, than you.

DAILY MINDSET

“The purpose of pain is to move us in action, not to make us suffer.”

~Tony Robbins

Pain gets a bad rap.
Not in our world.

Pain is purely a temporary feeling… where suffering is a state of mind.

As Tony Robbins puts it, its purpose is to move us forward. It’s leverage. An advantage, and a very powerful one at that. Few things in the world can get a human being to move faster than pain. It’s our body and mind telling us to go.

Pain is mandatory.
Suffering is optional.

DAILY MINDSET

“We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.”

~Bill Watterson

There’s a common misunderstanding that if we allow ourselves to feel happy about something, we’ll lose our drive to improve. That in order to reach our goals, we need to hard-wire ourselves 24/7 with thoughts of how to improve and develop. Ironically enough, full focus on the future is one of the most self-destructive things we can do to ourselves.

When we celebrate our victories, we feel good. On a biological level, there is a “dopamine” release. By feeling this emotion of accomplishment… we become hungry for more. We crave that next dopamine hit, moving even more aggressively towards that next accomplishment. On the other hand, if we constantly deprive ourselves of that dopamine response… we will lose our drive. This is the definition of burnout.

Take a moment today to think about how far you’ve come since last year. And since you’ve started this amazing lifestyle called CrossFit. No leaderboard will ever tell us the full story. While we maintain our fiery state of mind to find the next best version of ourselves, let’s celebrate today.

DAILY MINDSET

“You make a living with what you get. You make a life with what you give.”

~Winston Churchill

Think back to a time in your life when you came in clutch for someone. One where your actions made a significant impact on someone’s life. Maybe it was a time where you showed up for a friend in a time of need. But you didn’t just show up… you went above and beyond. Not because of some expected return or alterior motive, but because you believed it was the right thing to do. You genuinely cared.

Think back to that day, and how that made you feel when you saw your impact. Think back to how it felt to know you made a difference. It felt good, didn’t it. Really, damn, good.

Science has shown us that one of the most powerful emotions we can feel, via serotonin, is released in mass at these moments. But what is even more interesting, is that it’s literally contagious. Think back to the last time you saw someone else doing something generous. Maybe it was as simple as holding the door open at the store for an elderly customer. Think back to that… How did you feel, witnessing that? Did it make you feel more generous?

If generosity is contagious, it just needs to be started.
Let it be us.
Be the change we want to see in this world.

DAILY MINDSET

“Don’t tell me who you are. Tell me what you are.”

When we are asked “who” we are, we default to our past. We define ourselves by our resumes. Although our past may give us insight of where we’ve been, it cannot be what defines us… for it’s the past.

When the question however asks “what” we are, we tend to give a different answer. We describe who we really are. It’s one of character, values and beliefs.

Will we be defined by who we’ve been in the past, or by what we stand for today? Let character be our loudest statement.

DAILY MINDSET

“I want to see it, before I believe it.”

We are visually oriented people.
We seem to trust our eyes more than our other senses.

It’s why we call our ultimate direction our “vision”. It’s why in the middle of the night, if we think we hear something, we want to take a look before we feel safe enough to fall back asleep. We can hear news through the grapevine, but we doubt it until we see it.

Recognizing this, we can leverage it to our advantage. Many of us will agree that there is power to writing down our goals, and this is why. We begin to believe it that much more. It feels that much more real.

Write down our vision. Write down our goals. Write down anything that is important, not because it’s a mundane task… but because we need to see it, before we believe it.
